It’s no secret that a design system can help you build better products faster.
But many people are still at a loss when it comes to choosing the right system for their project.
A design system will set the tone for everything that follows in your product development process. It will determine how you communicate with your team members, how quickly your products can be built, and how easily your user interfaces can be maintained. You want to make sure that whatever you choose will scale with your company as it grows and changes over time—so you need to pick one that’s flexible and reliable enough to meet those needs.
It can be applied to small projects, large projects, or anything in between.
Let’s look through some of the important factors of design:
Making things that matter is hard. And when you’re done, how do you know how well you did? There are a lot of factors to consider in the design process.
1. The audience: Who is the audience for this system? Are they developers or end users? What are their needs and goals? What’s the correct information to include?
2. The brand: Every company has a structure that defines how it will work and what its components are.
Like what is the brand’s personality and voice? How does that guide the language, visuals, and interactions used in the system?
3. Scope: The scope of a project is the range of things that it covers. It could be an entire application, or a single feature.
Trying to figure it out what you want to accomplish with this plot? Are you trying to create a website or app, or is it an entire ecosystem of apps, products, and services?
How to create Design systems?
When it comes to creating design systems, there are a number of options. You can create a custom system from scratch, or you can opt for an existing system.
If you opt for a custom system, which will allow you to have flexibility and build your own system from scratch, but this can cost more time and money. On the other hand, choosing an existing one means there are already established patterns that can be easily used. However, in the long run the benefits of opting for an existing system will diminish.
It’s also help with consistency throughout your product line by providing guidelines for how things should look and interact with each other.
Pre-build and custom design systems are different in a number of ways
Although this two words may seem similar, there are key differences in their implementation. One of the biggest differences is the price. Pre-built are generally cheaper than a custom designed system, but they do come with limitations to keep costs down.
Pre-built are designed by someone else—and that means they were built for someone else. So if your brand has specific needs (like: you need a form that collects different information than the standard form does), then a pre-built design system may not work for you.
Custom are built specifically for each company’s needs and goals, so there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The designer will work with you to determine what type of design system is best for your organisation, based on current needs and future goals.
